The State University of New York (SUNY) Exploring Emerging Technologies for Lifelong Learning and Success (#EmTech) is a free online learning opportunity tailored for college students, instructors, professionals, and anyone interested in effectively using technology in our rapidly changing world. The #EmTech course & EmTechWIKI assist learners and educators to identify the value and implications of using emerging technologies for professional and personal growth.

Digital & Media Literacy Objectives

      1. Develop lifelong learning habits and build a growth mindset.
      2. Use emerging technology tools and resources to build 21st-century skills.
      3. Evaluate the quality of established and emerging technologies.
      4. Demonstrate media literacy by effectively using media creation tools.
      5. Practice safe and secure practices in digital environments.
      6. Evaluate information to identify truthful and unbiased points of view.
      7. Apply Creative Commons guidelines to ethically use text and media.
      8. Apply accessibility principles and strategies to achieve digital equity.
      9. Analyze your digital footprint to portray a professional online identity.
      10. Create an ePortfolio or learning journal and reflect on your learning journey.

EmTech consists of two associated parts; the #EmTech course and EmTechWIKI.

The #EmTech course includes modules on Lifelong Learning as well as the 4Cs of 21st-century Skills: communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. Artifacts created through hands-on Discovery Exercises can be shared and used to create an ePortfolio or a private learning journal to reflect on the learning journey. Coursera certificates of completion and SUNY digital badges are also awarded. Enroll in the #EmTech course in Coursera.
EmTechWIKI is a socially curated search engine for discovering free tools, tutorials, and resources such as audio, video, blogs, wikis, presentations, simulations, and more. The WIKI can be used can be used along with the course and as a stand-alone resource. Everyone is welcome to add and edit WIKI resources.


EmTech has been developed through a collaboration among students, faculty, and staff from many campuses throughout the State University of New York (SUNY), the largest comprehensive university system in the United States.

Funding has been provided through a SUNY Innovative Instruction Technology Grant (IITG), a University at Buffalo Professional Pathways Grant, and a National Education Association (NEA) – Learning and Leadership Grant.
